چکیده

Structural health monitoring and damage detection techniques are tools of great importance in the offshore, civil, mechanical and aeronautical engineering communities, both for safety reasons and because of the economic benefits that can result. The need to be able to detect damage in complex structures has led to the development of a vast range of techniques, of which many are based upon structural vibration analysis. In the present article, some of the latest advances in Structural Health Monitoring and Damage Detection are reviewed, with an emphasis on composite structures on the grounds that this class of materials currently has a wide range of engineering applications. FOREWORD—It should be noted that this review is not intended to be a general, all-encompassing review covering the whole range of structural health monitoring (SHM); it was planned as the starting point for a study focusing on damage detection, localization and assessment for certain kinds of structure. Thus, the line of thought behind the search and the structure of this review is a result of objectives beyond the scope of the paper itself. Nevertheless, it was considered that, once the above was understood, an updated synopsis such as this could also be useful for other researchers in the same field.

Health Monitoring of Welded Steel Pipes by Vibration Analysis

In the present work, structure health monitoring (SHM) of welded steel pipes was used to diagnosis their state via vibration based damage detection techniques. The dynamic quantities such as Frequency Response Functions (FRFs), mode shapes and modal parameters from structural vibration to detect damage were measured, set on linear averaging mode, with a maximum frequency of analysis of 3.2 kHz....

Energy harvesting for a self-powered compact Structural Health Monitoring system based on Acoustic Emission

The use of composite materials in aerospace structures has been recently increasing on the basis that they could make structures lighter whilst maintaining the same level of safety; concerns and uncertainties on damage behaviour of such materials, especially on their tolerance to impacts, have forced designers to increase safety factors to a point that the use of advanced lightweight composite ...

Thermal Buckling and Thermal Induced free Vibration Analysis of Perforated Composite Plates: a Mathematical Model

This artcile is concerned with thermal buckling and thermal induced free vibration analyses of PCPs (perforated composite plates) with simply supported edges applying a mathematical model. The stiffness and density of PCP are defined locally using Heaviside distribution functions. The governing equations are derived based on CLPT. The present solution gives reasonable results in comparison with...

Health Monitoring of Civil Infrastructure and Materials

Despite the generally long life span of concrete structures, they cannot be considered maintenance-free. Several incidents of catastrophic failures remind the engineering world that monitoring of structures is imperative nowadays both for prevention of loss of life and property and also for effective infrastructure management based on a usually finite budget. Due to the variety of structural si...

A theoretical model for analysis of ionic polymer metal composite sensors in fluid environments

By the past two decades IPMCs have been intensively studied because of their special capabilities for actuation and sensing. This paper presents a theoretical physics based model for analyzing the behavior of IPMC sensors in fluid environments. The mechanical vibration of the IPMC strip is described by the classical Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. The model also takes in to account the physical pro...
